For context I have lived in both countries for extended amounts of time. I have lived in Thailand for more than a year and Bali six months. Both countries are full of culture, food, history and wonderful people. Thailand and Bali offer something very different though.
While both destinations are incredible, and in an ideal world you could travel to Bali Thailand (and everywhere else in SE Asia), I’m assuming you’re here because you have limited time and need to figure out whether it is better to visit Bali vs Thailand in your situation.
The short answer is: You can’t go wrong with either Bali or Thailand!
There are some significant differences between the two to consider — mainly that Bali is one island in the much larger country of Indonesia. But they are both are amazing (it’s no wonder they are both among the most popular destinations in Asia), and I’ll happily return to both Bali and Thailand.
With Thailand being a large country there is something for everyone to do. Whether you’re a backpacker traveling Thailand solo, family vacation or a honeymoon you will not be disappointed.
It is easy to bounce between the sun-soaked islands to find your slice of paradise.
You can head to the north of Thailand to enjoy the mountain, visiting the elephants and exploring temples by day. You could literally visit different temples for a week and still not cover them all.
Thailand is full of rich culture, beauty, and is very safe. The country itself is huge. The cities in the North that are the most popular are Chaing Mai, Pai and Chiang Rai and you will feel like you left Thailand for an entirely different country.
You might be a city slicker who needs public transportation, great nightlife and modern shopping centers? Bangkok is a world class city of their own. Bangkok has temples, a crazy night life and all types of accommodations.
Bali is not a country. I think most people don't realize this. It is an island in Indonesia. It is a lot smaller than Thailand. It also offers something different then Thailand.
You actually wake up at sunrise and hike Mount Batur and active volcano and then spend the afternoon admiring the rice terraces and be back in Seminyak for sunset.
If you are looking for a place to chill and relax, Bali has everything you need. From their long stretches of beaches, tons of hotels and resorts and world-famous culture it’s no wonder why people fall in love with Bali.
Bali is known for quality surfing and let’s not forget there is rafting, hiking, ATV's and so much more.
Some points to take into consideration when decided between Bali or Thailand.
1. Bali is affordable, but Thailand is cheaper.
2. Thailand is huge with the country consisting of islands, mountains and island cities. Bali is just an island.
3. Bali is easier to get around since it is a small island.
4. They have different rainy seasons. Bali is closer to Oceania which rainy season is October to April. Thailand rainy season is July to October.
5. Thailand has better beaches. Beaches in Bali are meant to surf not swim. Thailand beaches have clearer water, pristine sand and over all nicer.
6. Bali has more to do in a square kilometer. Meaning lots of activities and in a small area.
The three questions you should ask yourself when deciding:
1 When is Your Southeast Asia Trip?
2. Which flights are easier and cheaper?
3. Do you want to explore a lot or minimize travel?
This is just a quick guide to visiting Thailand verses Bali!
